ENERGY SAVINGS TIPS FOR SME’S

Posted on July 12, 2024

In today’s economic landscape, cost reduction is a top priority for business owners and managers across all sectors, given the rise in overheads. Recognising this concern through discussions with numerous entrepreneurs, we’ve compiled a list of practical energy-saving strategies tailored for small businesses.

Conduct an Assessment and Transition to High-Efficiency Equipment

There is a lot of energy consumed by computers, machinery and other electrics around the office or workplace, especially if they are old and lack the energy-saving features that a newer model would offer.

Upgrades to energy-efficient models can make a significant difference to your business’s energy bills. In the first instance, we’d recommend conducting an audit around your workplace and determine where you could upgrade and invest to incur longer-term cost savings; remember leasing is always an option so you don’t have a large financial layout to save longer-term.

Be sure to check if new equipment has either the ENERGYSTAR-rating or the European Energy Rating, these are electrical appliances that have been reviewed and tested for energy efficiency.

Furthermore, you should consider the following in your business:

  • Routinely clean or replace your HVAC filters – when using your cooling or heating system more air and matters are being channelled through your HVAC system, if not changed or replaced the HVAC filters can cause your system to be overworked and cost more to run.
  • Fridge maintenance – this one is particularly pertinent for food businesses, if you haven’t a maintenance schedule for your refrigeration you should consider it to ensure it runs efficiently.
  • Introduce sensor or self-closing taps to reduce water wastage.
  • Is your boiler in need of replacing? Newer boilers can use up to 30% less energy compared to their older and less efficient equivalents. Check how old your boiler is and what the energy rating is, boiler efficiency is measured by ERP (energy-related product) rating that is graded from A to G, with A being highly efficient.

Engage Your Team Members

Empower Your Team to Champion Energy Efficiency

Initiate a collaborative effort to brainstorm energy-saving measures within your company. Engaging your staff in this way fosters a sense of responsibility and commitment to the process. Reducing energy waste not only lowers bills but also promotes a more efficient, sustainable business environment that can inspire further employee-driven initiatives. Cultivate an ethos of energy conservation in your organization.

Here are some collective initiatives to consider:

  • Power Down: Motivate staff to completely shut down computers and monitors at day’s end, potentially saving £35 annually for each workstation.
  • Boil Wisely: Encourage the habit of boiling only the necessary amount of water for tea, saving time and energy.
  • Relaxed Attire: If suitable, adopt a casual dress code during warmer months to lessen air conditioning use.
  • Print Smart: Embrace digital solutions and print only when essential, moving towards a paperless office to reduce waste and costs. According to Kyocera, the average UK office worker uses 45 sheets of paper daily, with two-thirds deemed unnecessary. Transitioning to a paperless system can significantly cut this excess.

Assess the Energy Efficiency of Your Lighting

Switching to LED lighting is a smart move for any business. LEDs use 75% less energy than traditional incandescent bulbs and last much longer, which means lower electricity bills, fewer replacements, and reduced CO2 emissions.

Here’s a breakdown of the savings and emission reductions you could expect by replacing 10 standard 40w bulbs with 6w LEDs, based on 8 hours of daily use over 5 days a week:

  • Energy Consumption:
  • Non-LED: 832 kWh to 8320 kWh over 1 to 10 years.
  • LED: 125 kWh to 1248 kWh over the same period.
  • CO2 Emissions:
  • Non-LED: 451 kg to 4509 kg over 1 to 10 years.
  • LED: 68 kg to 676 kg, showing a significant reduction.
  • Cost Savings:
  • You could save approximately £120.22 to £1202.24 over 1 to 10 years.

Just by changing 10 bulbs, you could save over £600 in 5 years. Additionally, consider motion sensors to further reduce energy usage when spaces are unoccupied. For a personalized calculation of your savings, use an LED savings calculator.

Optimize Your Climate Control and Utility Contracts

With the changing seasons, it’s crucial to regularly adjust your heating and cooling systems to match the UK’s unpredictable weather, ensuring they operate only when necessary and at optimal levels.

It’s essential to periodically review your utility contract, especially given the recent fluctuations in the energy market. You might find that you’re paying more than necessary.
